We Let Our

Owners Launch

The Hardtop 2 Door

Most car companies keep their new models under wraps. Nobody without Top Secret security clearance can come near it, let alone get behind the wheel. That's no fun. So not only did we let 10 MINI Owners test drive the Hardtop 2 Door before the general public, we let them dream up their own Original Package and any test drive imaginable. And they did not disappoint.

I'd turn the new LED headlights into LED blacklights, cover the roads with fluorescent paint, and light up the night. Paint a trail of beautiful and wait to display it until night. Shine on, motor on.

MINI drivers tend to see the world through a different set of eyes. The sophisticated and distinctive LED headlights make sure of it. These new daytime driving lights can be equipped with optional integrated cornering lights that illuminate when the wheel is turned.

features TWINPOWER TURBO ENGINE TWINPOWER TURBO ENGINE

TWINPOWER TURBO ENGINES

Every model in the new MINI Hardtop's lineup comes with a cutting edge MINI TwinPower Turbo that leverages the renowned performance engineering and development expertise of the BMW Group. By supplying immediate torque that holds steady throughout the engine's power curve, the new MINI Cooper Hardtop goes zero to sixty 2.3 seconds quicker than its predecessor,* giving this new breed of Bulldog a whole lot of bite.

For the gearheads among us, the Cooper S model, which Ryan is driving in the video, puts out 189 horsepower and 207 ft. lbs. of torque, starting at 1250 RPM.

GETTING MEDIEVAL

By MINI Owner Rebecca S

My test drive idea is to see if the MINI has the capacity to get a few armored knights, with their full kit, to a tournament. There's some rather large equipment involved, and folks are always dubious when I offer them a lift with my MINI.

features SURPRISINGLY SPACIOUS SURPRISINGLY SPACIOUS

BIGGER THAN YOU EXPECT

"Wow! There's so much space in here!" (or some similarly surprised comment) is something we almost always hear from folks sitting inside a MINI for the first time. See, what most don't realize is that a few of our most important performance features - the engine turned sideways so it doesn't poke into the cockpit and our kart-like, wheels-at-the-corners layout - are actually solutions we invented over 50 years ago for the sole purpose of creating more interior passenger room. Add in our "plant-on" roof and you'll begin to understand why MINIs, perhaps ironically, are often the car of choice for some of the tallest motorers.

The new MINI doesn't just have more passenger space, it has more cargo space, too. Specifically, 8.7 cu. ft. with the rear seats up, which expands to a cavernous 38 cu. ft. with the seats folded down.

COFFEE CUP COEFFICIENT

By MINI Owner Adrienne R

How full can I keep my MINI travel mug, without spilling, while doing donuts? Establishing this *critical* coefficient is vital to redesigning the maximum fun equation.

features WORLD-FAMOUS HANDLING WORLD-FAMOUS HANDLING

WORLD-FAMOUS HANDLING PLUS SPORT MODE

With all 4 wheels pushed to the corners for a wide, go-kart stance, ideal front-to-back weight balance and an incredibly nimble suspension system, the new Hardtop has plenty of our iconic MINI swagger and go-kart handling. For even tighter control, the new Dynamic Damper Control (DDC) option actually lets you control the stiffness of the suspension. Want a softer, more fuel-efficient ride? Done. Or feeling hungry and in the mood to devour a few sharp turns? The DDC happily complies, stiffening your suspension for even more aggressive cornering, especially when you kick into Sport mode.

Sport mode is the most aggressive of the new MINI's three adjustable driving modes. Switching into Sport mode will automatically adjust your engine, steering and transmission settings for a stiffer, sportier ride. For softer, more fuel efficient mototring, switch into Green mode. And if you want the best of both worlds, go to Mid-mode for a happy motoring medium.

Surge

Adrienne's Originals Package Design

MINI Owners know better than most that less is more. Adrienne R. took this to heart when she designed her visually striking orange and black MINI Cooper S Hardtop. The final result marries an old-school motorcycle vibe with the next generation of MINI. And the name? "The idea behind the name is that this MINI is a surge of innovation, power and presence."

features GREEN MODE & SPORT MODE GREEN MODE & SPORT MODE

ADJUSTABLE DRIVING MODES

Every MINI Hardtop has 3 driving modes you can switch on the fly. For extra punch, use Sport Mode to automatically adjust your engine, steering and transmission settings points for a stiffer, sportier ride. For softer, more fuel-efficient motoring, switch into Green Mode. With optimized fuel delivery, tweaked shift points and a coasting feature that disengages an automatic transmission when your foot's off the gas, Green Mode maximizes every last bit of engine efficiency and kinetic energy for downright miserly fuel consumption. Of course, when you want the best of both worlds, kick it into mid-mode for a happy motoring medium.

features HARD BODY HARD BODY

RIGID BODY

features

Thanks to its high-strength steel front end and side panels, the rigid body of all MINIs reduces body torque, freeing the suspension to do what it does best - provide super-tight handling. A flex-free frame also reduces squeaks, rattles, vibrations and cabin noise. And the rigid body can withstand great forces, which means an increased margin of protection in the event of a crash.

MANUAL VS. AUTOMATIC

By MINI Owners Brian & Michelle C

We've been racing against each other since 2005. But the New Hardtop is the first time that MINI lists the Automatic as faster than the Manual. So let's put this to a head-to-head competition, husband vs. wife and manual vs. automatic!

SPORT AUTOMATIC WITH PADDLE-SHIFTERS

features

Did you really think you could hop into a MINI and not feel like a Formula 1 racecar driver? These Paddle Shifters for the 6-speed automatic transmission will ensure you do. Forget about a clutch. These steering-wheel mounted paddles put shifting at your fingertips, for quick control of your gearshift points so you can really maximize your MINI's performance. It's the best of both automatic and manual transmissions in one. Though side effects may include spontaneous visions of checkered flags.

Anyone can take it out on the twisties, but how well will the new MINI hold up in stop and go, bumper to bumper, a.m. (or p.m.) Chicago rush hour traffic? As much as I like taking Fiona [his current MINI] out to stretch her wheels, it's the daily drive that matters.

PARK ASSISTANT

features

How do you make parallel parking a MINI even easier? You teach it to park it itself. This optional premium technology uses ultra sonic sensors to size up a potential parking spot to make sure your MINI can fit. Then, if there's room to squeeze in, the system will partner with the Park Distance Control to take over and steer the car into place. All you have to do is work the gas and brake when the system prompts you.
