SIX AIRBAGS

In all hardtop MINIs, six total front and side airbags (with two of the airbags being of the tubular structure sort) come standard and ready to engage if needed. Safety sensors are the key. See, your MINI has "smart" airbags that are constantly monitoring driver and front passenger position, seatbelt use and impact severity - and then determining airbag inflation rates accordingly.

Also important to note is that the side-impact airbags are in the seat, rather than the typical spot, the door. That means the airbags move with you and will open in exactly the right spot- no matter where your seat is.

The real innovation, though, is our Advance Head Protection System (AHPS II). Utilizing technology developed for the military's Black Hawk helicopters, AHPS II can only be found in MINIs, a few BMWs, and well, Black Hawk helicopters. In the event of a collision, the AHPS II system, located in the headliner, inflates to cushion the front and rear passengers. These tubular inflated structures stay inflated longer than conventional airbags, helping to prevent head or neck injuries that can commonly occur in multiple-impact collision and help safeguard against flying glass.
