Inside Mini

The Starter Spark

When MINI made its U.S. debut, there was one dealer that played a crucial role in launching the modern era. Meet the man who handed over that first set of keys and jumpstarted a community built on common ground in the process.

NEW ERA,
SAME AURA.

On a crisp morning in January 2001, the North American International Auto Show opened its doors to hundreds of car collectors, enthusiasts, industry insiders, and likely a few of their friends. Whether it was wonder or the wind that ushered them in, they were greeted by the debut of the modern MINI—a collection of icons reborn and ready for the future, with their original heritage, character, and charm remarkably intact.

A little over a year later, in late March 2002, that bold vision became a reality. The first MINI Cooper sold in the United States, rolling off the lot at MINI of Peabody and into the hands of a Boston-area car collector. The man behind that historic first sale? Brig Currie—a dealer who would go on to help tens of thousands of owners get behind the wheel of their dream MINIs.

More than two decades later, Currie's enthusiasm for the brand has only accelerated.

“I've enjoyed MINI being such a fun automotive brand and being different and the unique customers that come along with that make it enjoyable every day.”

From humble beginnings in a garage in Oxford, England to a presence in more than one hundred countries, buckle in for the backstory of MINI.

ZEST
FOR LIFE.

Over the years, Currie has picked up on a few key characteristics that differentiate MINI owners:

“What sets our customers apart is that they want something playful, with unique styling.”

For a car with dozens of customization options, paint colors, and design variations, it’s no surprise that MINIs and self-expression make the perfect pairing. MINIs might have vibrant exteriors, but they are ultimately a blank canvas for self-expression. They’re a statement of individuality in an unexpected space—the salmon swimming upstream.

That shared spirit between owners creates something electric. It happens organically, and it's a big part of what makes the MINI community feel so alive and genuinely authentic. You can feel it in the air at MINI Takes the States—the biennial road rally that winds across America's most scenic landscapes. Every other year, hundreds gather to celebrate not just the car, but all the beautiful idiosyncrasies that brought them to the starting line.

TIMELESS
APPEAL.

When asked about his favorite MINIs, Currie doesn't hesitate—it's the contrasting roof colors and the special editions that have dropped over the years and to this day.

MINI Icon Drops are our latest revival of a tradition that has spanned decades—a history of releasing special-edition vehicles that speak to culture and character. Launching from early 2026 through 2027, these eight icons are heading straight into the hands of those who fear ordinary. Each Icon Drop is designed to stand out and tell a unique story. But whether future owners opt for a special-edition Icon Drop or a tried-and-true MINI classic, one thing never changes:

"The legendary look is timeless," Currie says simply. And honestly? We couldn't agree more.
