The John Cooper Works Story: Origins, Racing Heritage and Winning DNA

The John Cooper Works Story: Origins, Racing Heritage and Winning DNA

As told by Charlie Cooper.

Rebels don’t wait for change—they are the change.
And us, well, we’ve been rewriting the rules since the very first lap.

MEET THE COOPERS.

It was in a humble garage in 1946 when my grandfather, John Cooper, and his father, Charles, revolutionized motorsport with a bold idea: rear-engine race cars. The Cooper Car Company quickly made history, and by 1959, Jack Brabham claimed the first of two Formula 1 World Championships—changing the sport forever. But Formula 1 glory was just the beginning. Grandad was intent on making a motorsport icon of the compact, family car designed by friend Alec Issigonis. The MINI Cooper was born, followed by the mighty Cooper S in 1963. By 1964, the MINI had conquered almost every competition—except one: the Monte Carlo Rally.

A CHAMPION IS BORN.

It was with fearless determination that Cooper’s high-performance contender faced the ultimate test in 1964. An underdog if there ever was one, the Tartan Red MINI Cooper S was up against powerful rivals and treacherous terrain. Against all odds, Number 37, with Paddy Hopkirk at the wheel, clinched the first of three straight MINI Monte Carlo Rally wins.

FAMILY BUSINESS.

It was with the dawn of a new millennium that my father, Michael Cooper, and my grandfather revived the rebel alongside the Rover Group, bringing the 1991 MINI Cooper to the masses. Grandad lived to see this magnificent revival before passing in the year 2000. Determined to carry the family legacy forward, my father founded the John Cooper Works brand in 2002. First came the JCW Performance Tuning Kits, then the MINI John Cooper Works GP. Then, in 2007, BMW made it official.

WINNING DNA.

It was winning DNA that led the rebel back to the starting line. More high-performance models followed the first GP—selling out just as fast. Each one demonstrated the unique ability, performance, and charm that characterized the very first MINI Cooper. Naturally, MINI victories started rolling in once again. From the scorching sands of the Dakar Rally to the unforgiving twists and turns of the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

WAVING THE JCW FLAG.

It was almost 80 years ago, that a revolution was set in motion. Today, the John Cooper Works flag waves in a revolutionary era—one studded with pedal-to-the-metal rebels, roaring engines, electrified icons, and a refreshed logo that nods boldly to thrilling racing adventures ahead.

Because it was in this humble garage in 1946 that the John Cooper Works revolution began. And I’m honored that, still today, the rebel roars on.
